Gerhard Richter is an important artist in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries; his work spans nearly five decades. Here, you can view his work and learn about his life.

Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932 to a middle class family. Like many Germans of his generation, his relatives were involved in the Nazi movement; his mother's brother, Uncle Rudi died a young Nazi officer, while Richter's mentally disabled aunt was imprisoned in a Hitler euthanasia camp. Rigorous ideology and death have haunted Richter since he was just a child, perhaps causing his strong dislike for ideology of any kind and underpinning the attraction that nature, as an indiscriminate force, holds for him.

Support from his mother encouraged him to become an artist during his mid-teens and he embarked on a classical education at the Dresden Art Academy in Communist East Germany. Years later and a few months prior to the erection of the Berlin Wall, he and his wife fled with only a suitcase to Düsseldorf in West Germany. From 1961 to 1964, Richter studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Karl Otto Gotz.

Just months before San Francisco became a hub of wartime activity, this amateur color film was made by John Summers. Did you know that Joe DiMaggio had a large restaurant on the wharf? That summer, Joltin' Joe was setting his record-breaking 56-game hitting streak for the Yankees. This was when the area was more of genuine working fishermen's wharf than a tourist attraction.

The sounds are made with the help of a collection of failing hard drive sounds, while the video is a combination of failed pdf screengrap videos.
It is the first time I made a (kind of) music video-thing all on my own. I didnt use any software except for firefox and quicktime - so not a 100% open source, unfortunately for all the hardcore opensource people\\\...
but it is very lo-fi! -if that makes it better.

Today we were in Rustavi to record an art video. No influence we had about the weather. The dusty mood was a daily situation. The sheep were not invited from us. We know that the reality and the history to understand ... it is not easy today. Therefore we looking for any strange thinking and made experiments with playing without a real diretion ... Our result was a strange combination of history in a unknown area ... sometimes it was funny and sometimes it was a serious fiction ... with remarkable effects. Ralph Hälbig
