"Kai Bichebi" (Dudes) by Graf Oto von Rubin
In the center is shown Duru Khurtsilava, who lived in Zugdidi (Megrelia) and got problems with dictatorship in former Soviet Georgia, came up in prison. He was so strong, that smashed the door of his prison cell and brought it to the director of the Prison. He managed to escape several times as well. He later got killed for unknown reasons (maybe it was organized) in prison. Later was written a book about him and in about 1988/89 a fim "Duru".

About Horse Races at Alex' TransCaucasus
Photograph courtesy of Pridon Beroshvili at Indurta.com
Horse Races are playing an important ritual role in the Mountain Regions of Georgia, especially in Khevsureti and Tusheti.
Alex is on track of the tradition of the Georgian Mountain People and has two very interesting posts. One is pretty weird and a bit absurd from a Horse Race Alex followed as a visitor
http://transcaucasian.blogspot.com/2007/05/zezwaoba-dalaoba.html
the other goes deeper into the origins and impact of the Horse Race in Khevsureti as a part of that culture:

Thank you Alex for your research !

About “Horse Thief Sayat-Nova-Street”
After living in
I started dreaming about the historical grounds in Old Tbilisi and suddenly to my mind returned a lithography about a Caucasian Horse Thief, which I made in 2005 at Aslan Tsitaishvilis work shop at
A while back 6-7 years ago I had quite some problems to avoid my own three horses stolen in Kakheti. Rumours were afloat, that if your horse had been stolen, you could still try to buy it back at a certain hidden base near Kvareli, if you failed, you never saw it again, but the thieves brought them for sale via the narrow passes to
Out of these memories, out of my love to adventures, to

My upcoming show at Baia Gallery Tbilisi starting on March 28 is intended to give a survey of my artistic discoveries in 2007 and on that romantic theme “Horse-Thief-Sayat-Nova-Street”.

I am proud to welcome Timo Vogt and his Photo Agency Randbild in the Art Club Caucasus International. Timo travelled the whole Caucasus Area various times and fell in love to it. He has a talent to catch situations, which look at first glance common, but develop to a true time witness/ Zeitgeist photo with a deeper look. Timo will marry his girl-friend Tine in June in Germany, our best wishes to them from the Club.

Andreas Thieme, painters painter, Dresden
Ok, after Herr Holger John joined the Club as the best living German drawer a short time ago, today joined the Art Club from the same famous town of Dresden, the best living German painter (at least too me, and a few others) Herr Andreas Thieme.
I am incredible glad, as he told me, that he tries to join our little party in August, despite his duties in the studio. He said, he will eventually do some small drawings in Tusheti :-)
Willkommen Herr Thieme !
NEW: Painting by Maka Batiashvili: Teenager, 2008, 60x50cm
The artist lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she was born in 1975. After her studies of monumental painting she devoted herself to smaller formats and video works that were shown in diverse exhibitions in Georgia. Her works are journeys into silent strange worlds – thanks to concentrated observations from an unusual perspective, and thanks to their references to Georgian everyday life. Apart from her work as artist Maka Batiashvili is member of the Georgian Artist Group and curates and organises political actions.
"Art is not only a means of pleasure, but also expression and establishment of freedom, the relation of the internal world to the surrounding environment (…), the conflict of idealism and realism, the relation between the existence and non-existence. The mentality of the artist is always related to the events around him, because these events create the art." (Maka Batiashvili)

Where do we go... here you see: Reunion 2008 Tusheti
I hope that all of our members, who do want, can join our first Reunion. You should come to Tbilisi at around 15th or 16th of August. We stay 2 easy days in Tbilisi, to show you some studios and Art Cafes and then we move slowly to Kakheti, the Wine Region in Eastern Georgia, where we will have some glasses of wine, probably, we will stay in the village Alvani at different houses of my friends.
Then we go up in the mountains to Tusheti, and stay there 6-7-8 days, then we go back down, and the next day back to Tbilisi. Then you are free to enjoy some more time in Georgia, independent or in groups or all together, f.e. at the Black Sea beaches or somewhere else, but that will not organized by myself, as artists are against too much organizing I guess ;-))
So, we go to Kakheti on 17th of August and are back in Tbilisi probably by 26th or 27th.
If you are sure, that you want to join, please drop me a message at kaukasus@gmail.com
All photos are by Trix Zürcher, Switzerland, who joined our last Cattle Drive in September/October 2007
